1 Corinthians 11:23-25 “The Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’ In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.’”

It was the night of Jesus’ arrest leading to His crucifixion. He knew that the time was drawing close. He had long waited for this moment with His disciples. There is a sense of anticipation when He took Passover bread, gave it to His disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”

Then He took the cup and explained that this was the establishing of a new and better covenant in His blood. Strange words that would make sense only hours later. “Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

This He then committed to them as a sacrament to be repeated by the church saying, “This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” At Cross Connection that’s exactly what we do. Every first Sunday of the month we celebrate communion to remember Christ’s death, burial and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins.
